Bomb threat at Kolkata Metro station

Kolkata: Security has been stepped up at all the 17 Metro stations here after the city police received a tip-off about a possible bomb blast at one of the stations on Wednesday, officials said.

"We received information from a reliable source on Wednesday afternoon that there will be a bomb blast at one of the 17 Metro stations by today (Wednesday) night," Police Commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty said in the evening.

"We have taken it seriously and have stepped up security at all the stations," Chakraborty said.

Additional railway police have been deployed at all stations and passengers and baggage are being thoroughly checked by officials, the police said.

Personnel from the bomb disposal squad too are present at the stations. Sniffer dogs are being used to check every nook and corner of the stations.

At the same time, Deputy Commissioner (headquarters) Vinet K Goyal requested commuters not to panic.

"There is no need to panic but to remain alert. There are adequate number of police personnel at all stations. If commuters see anything or anyone suspicious, they must inform the police immediately," Goyal said.

The Metro railway in Kolkata, run by the Indian Railways, extends from Dum Dum area near the airport to Tollygunj, in south Kolkata.
