I am afraid that I may not identify myself with Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail! I am rather like  SMILING PINKY who sought RESURRECTION in PLASTIC SURGERY!

We all love the MAGIC of MIND CONTROL, BRAINWASHING and BLACKOUT. EXPOSED REALITY irritates us and we turn BLIND NATIONALITY over aware of the SO CALLED IMAGE of the GOLDEN GOOSE! We lose last symptom of HUMANITY in the SILK ROUTE REDISCOVERED to link us with the WEST this time!

Any exposure of HUMANITY exposes our PSYCHE ENSLAVED and SUICIDAL!

I visited MUMBAI recently and saw the film Slumdog Millionaire to have a feel of SOCIAL and ECONOMIC REALISM about MARATHA MANUSH!

I have seen DHARAVI from outside.

I have to encounter the SLUM METRO KOLKATA everyday every time while the great CALCUTTANS are HABITUAL to feel Aryan as well as ANGLO SAXON!

We may not identify ourselves with our BLACK UNTOUCHABLE Negroid or DRAVID forefathers anyway.

KOLKATA metro remains SINGLE DIMENSIONAL as described by no less a person than SACHIN CHOWDHURY who dismissed the idea to shift ECONOMIC and POLITICAL WEEKLY from MUMBAI to Kolkata. He described the reason as KOLKATA being single dimension. What he did not tell, happens to be the class character of KOLKATA.

IT is ABSOLUTE BRAHAMINSM which rules KOLKATA as well as BENGAL. But the Brahmins are neither ABORIGINAL nor INDIGENOUS.

The BRAHMINS in Bengal consists only THREE percent of the population and has CAPTURED every thing in Bengal.

THE BRAHAMINICAL HEGEMONY runs on the SUPER HIGHWAY of Marxist capitalism based on POST MODERN MANUSMRITI.

From that Highway, no one would be able to see and smell SLUMs around.

If you travel by any SOUTH SEALDAH SECTION train and it halts in between ParK Circus and Balleyganj, you may have to smell the SLUM LIFE around you. But in day to day life we never have the feel.

The RULING Class never cares for those who are destined for the GUTTERS and the SLUMs!

The Partition victim unrehabiliated Productive forces do inhibit the GUTTERS and SLUMs in KOLKATA mostly. But the affluent and settled URBAN SUBURBAN people never enjoy any distinct sympathy for this lot as they had always been DETACHED and HATING not only those who are thrown out of BENGALI Geopolitics due to PARTITION HOLOCAUST designed by the HEGEMONY itself, but it also denies any SPACE anywhere in any sphere of life!

Much HYPED SOCIAL Realism aesthetically beautiful and acclaimed worldwide, depicted in all forms and genres of ART and CULTURE happen to be BRAHAMINICAL!

The KAYASTHA BRAHMINS of Bengal have replicated ANGLO SAXON Racism and practice not only UNTOUCHABILITY most scientifically to deprive the majority SC, ST, OBC and Minorities, but it also uses APARTHEID without any MERCY with complete SURGICAL PRECISION.

Thus, Bengali Filmmakers or INTELLIGENTSIA never feel the ENTHUSIASM felt by the rest of the country!

Personally, I belong to a privileged section of the society!

I have UPROOTED myself in the process of JOB MOBILISATION and I ride the LIVELIHOOD ladder and enjoy it very well! Thus, it is very much IMPOSSIBLE for a man like me to identify myself with the SLUMDOGS of MUMBAI or KOLKATA or New DELHI!

We may not feel the HEART of DHARAVI!

AR RAHMAN has rightly talked about the choice of LOVE! We are deprived of the FEEL as we the artificial ANGLO SAXONs later converted into AMERICANISM are nowadays not habitual of  LOVE, AFFECTION, REALITY, HUMANITY, Interactions, RELATIONs and PEACE.

We love the sets set in foreign land. We enjoy the DREAM life only abundant on the screen. We suffer from DEMENTIA and never may IDENTIFY who we are in reality.

The COLOR and PROSPERITY on SCREEN however hardcore, false, artificial, designed, manipulated, obscene, happens to be MORAL for us.

POVERTY, Foodinsecurity, Unemployment, DISPLACEMENT, CORRUPTION, REPRESSION, PERSECUTION, SEGREGATION, Untouchability, Apartheid- everything  is justified to have a SECULAR HINDU NUCLEAR SHINING FREEsexINDIA damned into IT EXPLOSION and infinite mass DESTRUCTION!

We may enjoy XXXXX hardcore literature and films. but we may not tolerate POVERTY or Starvation on SCREEN!

Slumdog Millionaire, the highly acclaimed movie based on Indian slum of Dharavi, bagged 8 awards, which included the best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Sound mixing, Film editing, Directing, Music, Original score and Best picture categories.

Smile Pinki, a 39-minute short film in Hindi and Bhojpuri, directed by Emmy-nominated producer Megan Mylan also won the best documentary short subject Oscar.

The Picture of Dorian Gray - by Oscar Wilde - 242 pages

History was created today, after 17 years, at the Oscar ceremony held in Los Angeles on February 22, when Resul Pookutty held the Golden Beauty in his hands. Next in line was A R Rahman, who won the best music and the best original score awards. Its been long since India brought home the Golden Beauty. Twenty-seven years ago, Bhanu Athaiya made history when she became the first Indian to win an Oscar in the best costume design category for the movie Gandhi. Satyajit ray was the last Indian to have won an honarary Oscar for lifetime achievement in films, in the year 1992.

Ella pughalum iraivanuke (All glory and fame is to god)" was how music maestro A.R. Rahman reacted to his double-Oscar feat.  People of Chennai broke into celebrations on Monday as its prodigy and music maestro Allah Rakkha Rahman made history becoming the first Indian to receive twin Oscars with his musical score in 'Slumdog Millionaire.

Besides god, the 'Mozart of Madras' also dedicated his Oscars to his "loving" mother Kareema Begum, who was seated among the audience at the Kodak Theatre.

Rahman has always dedicated his awards to them. "I always had a choice between love and hate in my life. And I chose love and I am here," a beaming Rahman said at the Awards Ceremony.

Having shouldered the responsibilities of his family at the tender age of nine, Rahman never had an opportunity to get proper education in his life

Begum had in an interview to a Tamil weekly had said she will feel bad forever for not giving her son an opportunity to enjoy his childhood days.

Slumdog Millionaire, undoubtedly has brought the best out of Kerala-born sound engineer Resul Pookutty besides helping him win an Oscar.

Pookutty has also won a BAFTA and a Cinema Audio Society (CAS) award for best sound mixing for the film. Hailing from a small village of Vilakkupara in Kerala’s Kollam district which didn’t have electricity, he studied under a kerosene lamp.

He then went to the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune from where he graduated in 1995. The sound designer accepted the Oscar along with re-recording mixers Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke. He made his debut in 1997 in Rajat Kapoor’s “Private Detective” and went on to work in films like Sanjay Leela Bansali’s Black, Gandhi My Father and Ghajini.

His film credits include Saawariya, Zinda, Musafir and Amu. He won the Zee Cine award for the best Sound Designer for “Musafir” while he won critical acclaim for his work in “Black and won all the major awards in India.

Meanwhile, Multiple Oscars are literally working wonders for the print version of Slumdog Millionaire, with the book fetching more than 61 times the starting auction price of Rs 270 on online marketplace eBay on Monday.

A copy of the book signed by the film's stars Dev Patel and Freida Pinto was snapped up by a bidder from Belgium for Rs 16,600. Going by the same name as the Oscar-winning film, auction of the book's copy started at a price of Rs 270 last week. The proceeds from the auction would be utilised for charity purposes by Plan India, an NGO working for child rights.

"I am excited that eBay India is hosting a charity auction of an autographed copy of the famous Slumdog Millionaire book. It is a great honor to contribute to the cause of child rights and Plan India is doing such an admirable job," Slumdog Millionaire's star Freida Pinto said in a statement.

The auction of the book's copy, which fetched Rs 16,600, began on February 16 and saw the participation of 40 bidders. Slumdog Millionaire swept the Academy Awards, winning eight Oscars including two for music director A R Rahman.

British scriptwriter Simon Beaufoy fetched the first Oscar in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for for Slumdog Millionaire, based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup's novel Q&A.

"It is a tremendous honour. I thank Vikas Swarup, without him Slumdog... would not have happened, thanks Vikas Swarup," said Beaufoy while accepting the golden statuette.

"Thank you Dev, thank you Latika and the entire cast and crew of Slumdog," Beaufoy said.

The scriptwriter has already bagged the Golden Globe and BAFTA for Slumdog Millionaire.

"I learnt a lot about life," said Beaufoy about his India experience.

This is a first Oscar for Beaufoy, who was earlier nominated in 1997 in the Original Screenplay Category for the film Full Monty

As India went agog over the runaway success of the film, 'Slumdog Millionaire', set in Mumbai, at the Oscars, the British Premier Gordon Brown hailed the success of the film as a "fantastic achievement" of the UK film industry.

"Britain's film industry now leads the world," declared Brown as he heaped praise on the 'Slumdog Millionaire' team and actress Kate Winslet.

Rags-to-riches drama Slumdog Millionaire swept the board of 81st Academy Awards winning eight Oscars, including the best film and director for Danny Boyle. Winslet ended her Oscar drought by scooping the best actress award for holocaust drama 'The Reader'.

"I was lucky enough to see the film (Slumdog Millionaire) myself and understand how it has captured the imagination of people all over the world. It's success is truly deserved," Brown said in a statement.

The Oscar night brought a smile to many Britons as 'Slumdog Millionaire' swept the Oscar awards with eight Academy Awards, beating 'Shakespeare in Love', the last British film to dominate the Academy Awards.

The series of awards for Slumdog Millionaire prompted experts to claim a 'British winning streak' at the Oscar ceremony, starting with the Best Director award for Danny Boyle.

Boyle, who had never been nominated for an Oscar before, is known for directing a number of low-budget, cult films including Trainspotting, Shallow Grave and 28 Days Later. The Oscar win made him the first British recipient of the best director Oscar since Sam Mendes was honoured in 2000 for 'American Beauty'.

It was, as the BBC gushed, 'a great night for Britain' while The Times said Slumdog Millionaire led 'a night of British triumph'.

Slumdog Millionaire was made on a budget of just 7 million pounds, but has now generated almost USD 100 million at the US box office alone.

Hailing Slumdog Millionaire's Oscars impact, The Independent said, "It was a fitting tribute for a film that has captured the spirit of the age, providing a troubled world with a healthy dose of feel-good escapism and making international stars of its previously-unknown cast".

A R Rahman today became the first Indian to win two Oscars for his scintillating music in ”Slumdog Millionaire” which swept the Academy awards winning eight with one going to sound engineer Resul Pookutty. “Slumdog Millionaire”, a rags to riches story of a Mumbai slum dweller, who goes on to win USD 20 million in a quiz show, was adjudged the best film. It also fetched Danny Boyle the Best Director award, Simon Beaufoy best Adapted Screenplay and Anthony Dod Mantle the best Cinematography award. The film was also awarded for Best Editing. A beaming 43 year old Rahman said: “Before coming here I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt that way was when I was getting married. ”There is a Hindi dialogue 'mere pass Ma hai' which means even if I have got nothing I have my mother here. I want to thank her for coming all the way to support me,” Chennai born Rahman said in his acceptance speech after bagging the Original Score Oscar. The foottapping number 'Jai ho', with lyrics by Gulzar, was adjudged the Best Song. Pookutty, who hails from Kerala's Kollam district, received the award for Best Sound Mixing with corecordists Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke.

A R Rahman has become the first Indian to win two Oscars for his scintillating music in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ which swept the Academy awards winning eight with one going to sound engineer Resul Pookutty.
‘Slumdog Millionaire’, a rags-to-riches story of a Mumbai slum dweller, who goes on to win INR 20 million in a quiz show, was adjudged the best film.

It also fetched Danny Boyle the Best Director award, Simon Beaufoy best Adapted Screenplay and Anthony Dod Mantle the best Cinematography award. The film was also awarded for Best Editing.

A beaming 43-year-old Rahman said: "Before coming here I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt that way was when I was getting married.

"There is a Hindi dialogue 'mere pass ma hai' which means even if I have got nothing I have my mother here. I want to thank her for coming all the way to support me," Chennai- born Rahman said in his acceptance speech after bagging the Original Score Oscar.

The foot-tapping number 'Jai ho', with lyrics by Gulzar, was adjudged the Best Song.

Pookutty, who hails from Kerala's Kollam district, received the award for Best Sound Mixing with co-recordists Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’, based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup's novel ‘Q & A’, came to the 81st Academy Awards ceremony with 10 nominations and failed to win only in the Sound Editing category. Rahman had also received a nomination in the Best Song category for 'O saya' in the film.

Veteran filmmaker Satyajit Ray was awarded a lifetime achievement Oscar in 1992 and prior to that Bhanu Athaiya won one for costume design in Richard Attenborough's "Gandhi" in 1983.

There was more good news as ‘Smile Pinki’, the tale of a Uttar Pradesh girl and her fight against the social stigma of a cleft-lip, won the Oscar award for Best Documentary (Short). Directed by Emmy-award winning Megan Mylan, the film was shot in Mirzapur and Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ edged past Brad Pitt-starrer ‘The Curious Case of Benjamin Button’, which had 13 nominations. The film won three Oscars.

Kate Winslet won Best Actress Oscar for her role as a Nazi prison guard in ‘The Reader’ while Sean Penn was awarded the best Actor Oscar his portrayal of a gay-rights activist for ‘Milk’.

Heath Ledger bagged the Oscar posthumously for best Supporting Actor for his diabolic role of 'Joker' in ‘The Dark Knight’. Penelope Cruz picked up her first Oscar as she was named the Best Supporting Actress for the role in ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’.

Rahman, wearing a black bandhgala, also performed a medley of 'Jai ho' and 'O saya' assisted by dancers and singer John Legend.

The singer, who shot into fame in Bollywood with his score in Mani Ratnam's Roja, had earlier pocketed a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his music ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ besides a host of other awards.

It was an "unbelievable moment" for the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ team which stole the show at the red carpet with lead lady Frieda Pinto being the cynosure of all eyes in her elegant blue John Galliano gown.

She was joined by co-star and the film's lead protagonist British-Indian Dev Patel, clad in a black tuxedo.

Also dressed for the occasion in tuxedos and beautiful frocks were the two 'Salims' (Mohammad Azharuddin and Ashutosh Gaajiwala) and two 'Latikas' (Rubina Ali Qureshi and Tanvi Lonkar) were visibly excited to be present at the greatest awards night in Hollywood

The nine cast members, who played the three main characters in the rags-to-riches fairy tale were all on hand for the Oscars ceremony. The two youngest cast members, who still live in Mumbai's slums, were making their first trip outside India

After months of controversy and speculation, the wait will finally be over. With movies like Slumdog Millionaire , The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Reader leading the way in major categories, it's tough to predict who will take away the trophy. So do you think 2009 will be the year that ends India's dry run at the Oscars?

Film fraternity hails Rahman, Pookutty for win
As A R Rahman and Resul Pookutty scripted history by picking up three Oscars for "Slumdog Millionaire", members of the film fraternity here joined voices to applaud the enviable feat achieved by the duo.
Lyricist Gulzar, who penned the Oscar-winning song 'Jai ho' for which Rahman won an Oscar, said, "It is a great thing to be a part of this composition which has won an award.

It is an extra happiness and extra thrill for me."

"My first reaction was surprise and thrill but as soon as the programme started my bet was on Rahman. I am very happy for Resul, another Indian technician who brought home the Oscar," said Gulzar, whose name was mentioned by the award presenter Alicia Keys while announcing the nominees.

"What a film and what a team to work with. The spirit of the film is reflected in its team," he said and crediting Rahman with "changing the entire face of Indian film music".

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar hailed Rahman saying, "May he win such an award every year. He is a genius. Rahman's music is a blend of a little South Indian music and what we commonly call Hindi film music."

Sister and veteran singer Asha Bhonsle, who has sung for Rahman in many films, said, "Rahman is a genius and has made the world sit up and take notice of Indian talent with his success. He has put the Indian film industry on the world map."

Asha said her close association with the ace music composer began in 1995 when she first sang 'Rangeela re' from Ram Gopal Varma's ‘Rangeela’.

"I have seen him grow and I am very happy with his achievement," she said.

Percussionist Sivamani, who has closely worked with the maestro since the very beginning, said," It is wonderful.

Rahman has made every Indian proud. He deserves each Oscar that he has won. He won it because of his talent, his dedication, his simplicity and humility. We all should be proud."

South Indian composer M K Arjunan, who gave Rahman his first musical break by giving him a chance to play keyboards in a film, said, "I knew that this boy would make it big in the music world."

A close friend of Rahman's father R K Sekhar, Arjuna said besides being a born talent, his dedication, hard work and ability to pay attention to the minutest detail had helped Rahman to emerge as a musical legend of contemporary India.

R Madhavan, who has featured in many of Rahman's songs said, "This is just the beginning and Rahman you will take India and your music to great extent in the years to come."

Lyricist Prasoon Joshi said, "I think it is not his best work. He has done much better work in the past but this will lead people in the West to look up to the other works that Rahman and India have done."

It's 'Jai ho' for Rahman, wins two Oscars

A R Rahman today scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win two Oscars for the Best Original Score ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ and its foot-tapping song ‘Jai Ho’.
"Before coming here I was excited and terrified. The last time I felt that way was when I was getting married," he told in his acceptance speech after bagging the Original Score Academy.

"There is a Hindi dialogue 'mere pass ma hai' which means even if I have got nothing I have my mother here. I want to thank her for coming all the way to support me," the 43-year-old musician said.

Rahman was again on the dais to accept the Oscar for the best Original Song for the number "Jai ho", sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Mahalaxmi Iyer.

Before that he performed a medley of 'Jai ho' and 'O saya' assisted by dancers and singer John Legend.

"The essence of the film is about optimism and home.

The power of hope in our lives. All my life I had the choice between hate and love. I choose love and here I am," said the musician while accepting the award for best song, penned by Gulzar.

"There is something I say (in Tamil) whenever I win an award: 'Ella pugazlum iravanuku' (which means 'all the fame and the glory I dedicate to god'," he said.

Rahman had earlier pocketed a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his music in the Danny Boyle film, which won eight Oscars.

He became the fourth Indian to win the coveted trophy joining the ranks of Bhanu Athaiya and Satyajit Ray and Resul Pookutty, who won the Oscar today for sound mixing in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

Kate Winslet wins best actress Oscar for 'The Reader'

British actress Kate Winslet won her first Oscar on Sunday for her portrayal of a German woman with a secret Nazi past in the romantic drama ‘The Reader.’
‘Titanic’ star Winslet, 33, was Oscar-nominated five times in the past 13 years years but had always returned home empty-handed.

Her best actress Oscar joins two Golden Globes, a Screen Actors Guild award, a British BAFTA and a handful of U.S. critics awards that Winslet has won this season.

"To the academy, thank you so much," she said. Winslet gave credit to her fellow best actress nominees -- Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Angelina Jolie and Melissa Leo -- calling them "goddesses."

"I think we all can't believe we are in the category with Meryl Streep at all," Winslet said.

In addition to Winslet's acclaimed turn in ‘The Reader,’ she won plaudits this awards season for her performance as a disillusioned housewife in "Revolutionary Road." The two films were released only weeks apart.

Winslet told the Academy Award audience she would be lying if she said she hadn't practiced an Oscar acceptance speech before.

"I think I was probably 8 years old and staring into the bathroom mirror, and this would have been a shampoo bottle," she said gesturing to her golden statuette. "Well, it's not a shampoo bottle now!"

    'HARD, LONELY'

Winslet has said that portraying Hanna Schmitz, a former Nazi prison guard who embarks on an affair with a teen-age boy more than a decade later, was the most challenging role she had ever played because she had little in her own life to draw on.

"Just getting underneath the skin of such a complex person who had lived such an isolated life for so many different reasons, it was hard and quite lonely at times," she told Reuters in a recent interview.

Winslet found international fame as the co-star of the 1997 blockbuster ‘Titanic’ but rather than embracing Hollywood's big time, she opted for smaller, art house movies often made in her native Britain.

In parts ranging from the quirky girlfriend in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" to the laundress in an 18th century insane asylum in ‘Quills,’ Winslet made a point of avoiding the cute blonde actress career trap.

She is a close friend of her ‘Titanic’ co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, but it took the pair more than ten years to team up again, this time in the anti-romance "Revolutionary Road."

Winslet is married to Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes and has two young children. On Sunday she thanked all three for "letting me do what I love and who love me just the way that I am."

Sean Penn wins best actor Oscar for 'Milk'
Sean Penn took home the Oscar for best actor on Sunday for his portrayal of slain San Francisco gay rights activist Harvey Milk in the movie ‘Milk’ and used his win to defend the right of same-sex couples to wed.
Penn, 48, picked up the second Oscar of his career, the first being his 2004 win for his lead role as a grieving father in ‘Mystic River.’

"You commie, homo-loving, sons of guns," the sharp-tongued Penn told the audience as he collected his award. "I did not expect this and...I know how hard I make it to appreciate me."

The straight actor's portrayal of an openly gay politician was a timely one -- with ‘Milk’ coming out shortly after California's same-sex couples lost their right to marry in a voter referendum.

"I think it is a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to sit and reflect and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way," Penn said.

"We've got to have equal rights for everyone."

Penn, who has a tough guy image dating back to his early career scrapes with the paparazzi, convincingly evoked the legendary charm of Milk, who was shot to death in 1978 at San Francisco City Hall.

"He came in kind of ready made" for the role, openly gay ‘Milk’ director Gus Van Sant said.

In presenting Penn as a nominee, storied actor Robert de Niro joked: "How, for so many years, did Sean Penn get all those straight roles?"

Several critics called the performance the best of Penn's already storied and versatile career, which took off after his breakthrough surfer-stoner role as Spicoli in ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High.’

This year's best actor race was thought to be a battle between Penn and Mickey Rourke, an actor who scored a remarkable career comeback as an aging athlete trying to remain in the ring in "The Wrestler."

"Mickey Rourke rises again," Penn said. "And he is my brother."

Penn won the Screen Actors Guild award for best actor earlier this year and a slew of critics' prizes. The Oscar nomination for ‘Milk’ was his fifth in the best actor category.

Penelope Cruz wins supporting actress award for "Vicky"

Penelope Cruz won an Academy Award on Sunday for her supporting role as a fiery, funny woman in a three-way relationship with her ex-husband and an American woman in the Woody Allen film ``Vicky Cristina Barcelona.''

``Thank you Woody for trusting me with this beautiful character,'' a teary-eyed Cruz said as she accepted the award.

The win made Cruz the first Spanish woman to win an acting Oscar, one year after her compatriot and co-star Javier Bardem won best supporting actor for ``No Country for Old Men.''

Cruz delivered part of her acceptance speech in Spanish, saying that the win was for all the actors from her home country.

``I grew up in a place called Alcobendas, where this was not a very realistic dream,'' Cruz said.

Also nominated in the category were Amy Adams and Viola Davis for ``Doubt,'' Taraji P. Henson for ``The Curious Case of Benjamin Button'' and Marisa Tomei for ``The Wrestler.''

The award was presented jointly by five actresses who had previously won the award, Tilda Swinton, Whoopi Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Angelica Huston and Eva Marie Saint. Each actress made remarks about each of the five nominees before Swinton announce Cruz as the winner.

Cruz' win was the fifth win for supporting performers in Allen films. Past Oscar winners from Allen films include Dianne Wiest for ``Hannah and Her Sisters'' and ``Bullets Over Broadway,''; Michael Caine for ``Hannah and Her Sisters''; and Mira Sorvino for ``Mighty Aphrodite.''

      Mumbai slum hails Millionaire stars

      By Prachi Pinglay
      BBC News, Mumbai

      Slumdog celebrations in Mumbai
Friends of child actors Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail celebrate in Mumbai

"Jai ho!" (Victory!) was the refrain in the congested by-lanes of Garibnagar, the colony where Slumdog Millionaire child actors Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail live.

Neighbours and relatives in the colony, which runs parallel to railway tracks in a western suburb of Mumbai (Bombay), had been wide awake and buzzing from 0400 local time (2330 GMT Sunday) for the Oscar awards ceremony.

Munni Qureshi, Rubina's mother, said she was waiting for her daughter to return from Los Angeles. "I will go to the airport with a band of musicians and greet her. We are so happy for the children."

Farha and Dilshaad, her neighbours, had not eaten since last night - part of a fast in hope of success at the Academy Awards.

"We decided we'd eat only after all the awards are announced. Now we will celebrate and have breakfast. We prayed that Rubina would get success," beamed Dilshaad as she welcomed reporters into her house.

Rubina's friends have learned to dance to numbers like Jai Ho (AR Rahman's Oscar-winning song) and Ringa Ringa, and were happy to repeat their moves for the cameras.

"I can also dance, Rubina is my friend," repeated Muskaan.

      Good and lucky

In a tiny 3m by 3m (10-foot by 10-foot) room belonging to her uncle, a large flat TV screen is the only reminder of the recent success tasted by Rubina's family.

Rubina's parents' house is at the end of the lane, where people stream in and out to congratulate them.

We feel happy that two little children who live such difficult lives in Garibnagar have been given such an honour

      Muzammil, colony dweller

Mohsin, her cousin, watches the grainy screen intently and looks downward as every nomination with a kissing scene is shown. The women animatedly discuss new clothes for Azhar and Rubina.

Pervez Ahmed, who took Rubina and Azhar to the auditions of Slumdog Millionaire, said the children were very good as well as lucky.

"I have been taking children from these areas for shooting for nearly 20 years and have even worked for big commercial films but this is extraordinary. Even some of the biggest stars have not been able to go to the Oscars."

People went about their morning chores, washing and cleaning outside their hutments, but most still had their televisions tuned to the Oscars. Neighbours insisted the children should pursue their success and continue to act.

      Slumdog celebrations in Mumbai
The colony in Mumbai was up very early for the Oscar ceremony

There were conversations about the story of the film (many are yet to watch it), the actual meaning of the word Slumdog (there have been some protests in India that the term is derogatory) and the possibility of improving their lives.

And the media had amassed to hear the tales.

Reporters were everywhere where any details of the children and their families could be taken down.

Some residents complained about the chaotic scenes as journalists ran from house to house, and the odd scuffle ensued.

But still the celebrations continued, as the noise of the rush hour, of trains passing by and of traffic snarls cranked up.

Muzammil, one youngster who works in a nearby textile unit, mused on the rags-to-riches tale.

"Even if all of us worked for 20 years we would not be able to achieve this. We feel happy that two little children who live such difficult lives in Garibnagar have been given such an honour.

"That is why so many people stopped work today - to watch our stars on TV."

'Slumdog Millionaire' success: Yes, it was written
London, Feb 23 (IANS) "Slumdog Millionaire", the India-themed film that swept the 81st Academy Awards, almost ended up not being made as a movie.

So, how did it do it?

      A. The filmmakers cheated

      B. They got lucky

      C. It's a work of genius

      D. It is written

As the 'Slumdog family' - all 50 of them - turned up at the glamorous Oscars ceremony in the style of, well, an extended Indian family, they would have known that they almost didn't make it at all.

The film was made for $13 million - a tenth of the production cost of its Hollywood rival "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".

It had none of the publicity budget of its fellow-nominees: just flying "Benjamin Button" star Brad Pitt around the world cost its producers nearly as much as the entire primary shooting budget of "Slumdog...".

There wasn't even a recognisable star for non-Indian audiences - no Sean Penn or Angelina Jolie here.

Instead, "Slumdog..." had Dev Patel, a lanky, slightly geeky-looking lad from the Indian-inhabited London suburb of Harrow as its male lead. And Freida Pinto, a Mumbai model in her first movie role, was picked to play his love interest.

The film was based on a book written by a part-time writer - Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup, who made the best use of his free evenings to come up with "Q & A".

Finally, a quarter of the movie is in Hindi.

If there was one movie that was destined not to sweep the Oscars, surely it was "Slumdog Millionaire".

When British producer Paul Smith was sent a copy of 'Q&A' by author Swarup's agent Peter Buckman, he noticed that it had come with a note informing him that the movie rights had been sold to Film 4.

Smith, the man behind the British production company best known for the hit television quiz show "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire", wasn't entirely pleased.

"I said, 'Peter, you're an ass'," Smith recalls now. "If Film 4 or anybody wants to incorporate Millionaire into a movie they have to seek my permission and I would be inclined not to give it."

Smith, who had been involved in producing the movie "Dirty Pretty Things" on a shoestring budget, later thought: "That was fun and we made some money - shall we do it again?"

That hurdle crossed, the odds still seemed stacked against "Slumdog...". Distributors Warner Independent, an arm of Time Warner, folded up in May 2008, leaving the film's hapless producers considering the graveyard option of making a direct-to-DVD movie without a full cinema release.

But just when it looked like curtains for "Slumdog...", up stepped Fox Searchlight - a tiny arm of Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. known to back the small boys - with an offer to distribute.

Warner Independent, which had put in $5 million to distribute "Slumdog..." in North America, thought the film could be sold to small Indian-origin communities in the US and Canada, as well as art-house theatergoers, and hoped to gross $12 million to $16 million.

With the eight Oscar wins, it is now expected to make twice that amount.

"Slumdog Millionaire" begins with its underdog-hero Jamal Malik one question away from winning 20 million Rupees in a TV quiz show. The movie asks, "How did he do it?"

      A. He cheated

      B. He is lucky

      C. He is a genius

      D. It is written

As the movie ends in the happy reunion of Jamal and Latika, the woman he loves, it answers: "D. It is written".

With Sunday night's success, life imitated art in spectacular fashion.

Slumdog Millionaire novelist Swarup set to reap Oscar rewardsAlison Flood guardian.co.uk, Monday 23 February 2009 14.11 GMT Article historyDirector Danny Boyle won't be the only person in raptures at the board-sweeping success of Slumdog Millionaire at the Oscars last night: Vikas Swarup, author of the book on which the film is based, is also likely to be rubbing his hands together in glee.

Swarup's Q&A, the colourful tale of how an 18-year-old boy from the slums manages to win one billion rupees on a television game show, was ticking along at a perfectly average rate before Boyle filmed it for the big screen as Slumdog Millionaire, selling some 35,000 copies since publication three years ago, according to book sales monitor Nielsen BookScan.

But the film's initial success at the Golden Globes in January, coupled with pre-Oscar buzz, means the novel has sold the same amount of copies in the last month-and-a-half, according to the Bookseller, which reports that the paperback film tie-in edition has sold 35,666 copies since it was published on 2 January this year.

And the film's triumph at last night's Academy Awards, where it picked up gongs including best film, best director and best adapted screenplay, means sales of the book are set to climb even higher.

      Dharavi celebrates Slumdog Millionaire win
      2009-02-23 [15:30:29 hrs]

Residents of Dharavi locality were glued to the TV screens to celebrate the magical run of Slumdog Millionaire, whose backdrop is their locality.

"We plan to celebrate the win. There will be a party tonight. In fact, people are already in a celebratory mood," said Azhar Shaikh, who has been living in Dharavi for the past decade.

Danny Boyle's film, which bagged eight Oscars, is a stark look at Dharavi slum, where lakhs of people live in a square kilometer area.

Family of Rubina, who plays little Latika in the film,is readying to greet her after she returns from the Oscars ceremony.

"We will all be there at the airport when she returns," her father Rafique said.

His neighbours are also happy that the film, shot in their locality, has cornered Oscar glory.

The film had received mixed response across India as some slum dwellers found it offensive, with some critics even
      labelling it as "poverty porn".

Some like Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen said the movie
shows reality. "When I see Slumdog..., I say Mercedes as well as a bullock cart run on the streets of my country," she said.

One up on Shah Rukh, says Slumdog parent

From a shanty town in Mumbai, they are getting ready to walk the red carpet at the glitzy Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. Ten-year-old Azharuddin Ismail and Rubina Ali (9) cannot wait to make the title of the Slumdog Millionaire come alive.
Rubina and Azhar will fly to LA with their relatives for the Oscars and will be put up in a five-star hotel for two days by Fox Searchlight. The film, about an 18-year-old boy’s rags-to-riches story, has already won accolades at the Golden Globes and the BAFTA, and been nominated in 10 categories at the Oscars, including Best Film and Best Director.

Azhar’s elated mother, Shameem Ismail, is accompanying him. “Neither Shah Rukh Khan nor Salman Khan has ever been able to go for the Oscars, but my Azhar has made it. God has been kind on him.” Shameem, blind in one eye, hopes his son will get them out of the slums into a decent life. They now live in a makeshift home of tarpaulin sheets and sarees in the Behrampada shanty area, after their illegal shanty was demolished by the authorities.

Azhar, who plays little Salim in the movie, is excited about getting into an aircraft and is keen on meeting “Danny Uncle”. Ask him if he is scared of flying and he confidently says, “I’m not scared. I want to meet Danny Uncle there first.” Azhar idolises Salman Khan and wants to have a physique like him.

Azhar and Rubina have been busy shopping for the big day. “I want to click lots of pictures with big actors and show them to my friends,” she says, hurriedly trying on one of her dresses at her brightly lit home in the bylanes of the slum.

Her uncle Mohideen Khan, who is accompanying her, plans to dress casually. “I’m very excited about the trip. Maybe I’ll wear jeans and a shirt,” he says. Azhar, who has bought a suit, tried on a new pair of leather shoes at Kherwadi market.

When Resul almost walked out of Slumdog

Mumbai/Thiruvananthapuram Resul Pookutty almost made the biggest mistake of his life during the making of Slumdog Millionaire. The sound mixer, who picked up an Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing at Los Angeles's Kodak Theatre on Monday, felt the Slumdog team wasn't giving sound its due importance. After a heated exchange with Danny Boyle, Pookutty walked out of the film, only to be wooed back by the filmmaker.
Just before he left for foreign shores, to pick up the trophies from the BAFTA and Cinema Audio Society (CAS) award and now the Oscar, Pookutty said: "I would have been crying now had I not been persuaded to join the project back."

"It was a difficult project and Danny was very demanding. It put a lot of strain on me emotionally and physically," Pookutty recalled. Since the film was shot in Mumbai, a "very noisy city", in motion, the sound designer had trouble recording the sound from the viewers' perception. In keeping with the film's flavour, Pookutty decided to record the soundscape of the city.

The sequences shot at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus were among the toughest. "Since I wanted to record the sound of city life, I positioned my assistants with mikes across the station," he said.

In fact, after a career spanning 13 years in the industry, 36-year-old Pookutty applied fresh tactics for this film. "I had to constantly reinvent ways of getting the best possible sound," he revealed.

But then, just like Jamal in Slumdog Millionaire, perseverance has been the story of Pookutty's life. He was the youngest of eight children born to an impoverished family in a non-descript Kerala village, Vilakkupara, 80 km from Thiruvananathapuram. His father was a private ticket bus examiner, and he learnt to study in the light of the kerosene lamp as their village had no electricity.

Cinema was far from mind, and Pookutty tried his hands at many things before straying into the world of celluloid. He reared domestic animals, sold milk, later took tuitions to finance college.

For a brief while, he dreamt of becoming a doctor, but gave it up when he failed the medical entrance. After graduation in Physics, he joined the Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.

However, even then, say acquaintances, sounds seemed to hold a strong fascination. "During a recent reception at the village, Resul said the chirping of birds and gurgling of the rivulet had always evoked much curiosity in him," said his brother Baiju.

It was only out of curiosity and peer pressure that he applied for the sound engineering course at the Pune Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He failed the first time, returned to Thiruvananthapuram, and read up all the books he could find on sound engineering. In the next entrance examination and group discussion, Pookutty passed.

While there has been no looking back, in home state Kerala, it is only recently that people came to know Pookutty, who has been living in Mumbai with his wife Shadiya and two children for the past decade. "Even the people of Vilakkupara learned about the feat of its son only recently," said Baiju.

However, in the run-up to the Oscars, all that changed. Monday evening saw the entire village glued to television to watch the Oscars. As Pookutty's name was read out, the crowd was ecstatic. Many could not stop their tears and ran to kiss the screen. There were impromptu processions on the streets, many carried banners.

"After the results were out, Resul called me," says Baiju. "But emotionally choked, he could not speak." His regret remains that his parents, who are dead, couldn't see their son go so far.

Like most, Pookutty said he didn't have much inkling Slumdog Millionaire would go on to become such a phenomenon, though he was a fan of Boyle. "I even had a poster of Trainspotting in my room at FTII," he said.

When he first met Boyle, Pookutty added, he was tongue-tied when the British director asked him to suggest some films he should watch to know about his sound designing style. He replied, "Watch any of my films, you will find my mark." When he met Boyle for the second time, Pookutty said, he found that the director had done his homework.

Resul Pookutty dedicates Oscar to India

Sound engineer Resul Pookutty became the third Indian to bring Oscar glory for India by winning the award for sound mixing in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ here today.

"I dedicate this award to my country. This is not just a sound award but a piece of history that has been handed over to me," a beaming and emotional Pookutty said while dedicating the trophy to a billion Indians.

"I come from a country and civilisation that gave the world the word that precedes silence and is followed by more silence. That word is 'Om'. So I dedicate this award to my country," said Kerala-born sound technician.

Pookutty shared the honours with colleagues Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke.

"This is unbelievable. I share the stage with two magicians, who captured the noise and cacophony of Mumbai to create the soul stirring artful sound of 'Slumdog Millionaire'," he said.

Pookutty has won a BAFTA and a more recent Cinema Audio Society (CAS) awards for best sound mixing. He is the first Indian to win the CAS award.

      Slumdog party time in America
      K.P. NAYAR
Washington, Feb. 22: All the attention that Slumdog Millionaire is getting at the Oscars at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles has spawned a movement across the US to help children from the slums of Mumbai.

From Washington in the east to Los Angeles in the west, a Slumdog mania is sweeping in its wake hundreds of Americans — not merely Indian Americans — to Oscar-viewing parties that have been planned as fund-raisers to mitigate the sufferings of Jamal Maliks and Latikas that are described in the Indo-British film in a manner that is shocking to most western audiences.

At Columbia University in New York, the world’s oldest university organisation of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders, the Columbia Queer Alliance, is hosting a viewing party at the university’s Roone Alredge Cinema with the politically correct theme of ‘Slumdog Millionaire or Milk?’

The latter is a reference to Milk, another movie vying for the Oscars. It is about the life of Harvey Milk, who was murdered while fighting in the infancy of America’s gay movement for equal rights for homosexuals.

The theme is a pun on the names of the two Oscar-nominated films on what urgently matters to slumdogs: milk or millionaire status.

The Columbia Queer Alliance has existed since 1967 and its leaders claim a legacy of “pioneering activism and social justice”. The alliance has teamed up with Club Zamana, the university’s largest South Asian organisation, for tonight’s party in New York.

In downtown Washington last night, about 200 people packed the Panache Restaurant and Lounge to hear DJ Ali Ji belt out music from Slumdog — its upbeat finale Jai Ho and Lankan-origin rapper M.I.A.’s hit, Paper Planes.

Fox Searchlight, the distributors here for Slumdog, provided DMVABCD, a Washington-based production company, which hosted last night’s party, with CDs of the film’s soundtrack and other memorabilia that were raffled away.

Fox Searchlight also permitted the film’s official trailer for the Oscars to be played during the party.

Pushpa Koneri, one of the organisers, said the entire proceeds from last night’s event, would be donated to Hamara Foundation, which runs a development initiative for street children in Mumbai. The foundation began operating as a part of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai in 1989 and became a full-fledged NGO in 2002.

“It was serious,” Koneri said about the objective of the pre-Oscar party. “But it was also fun.”

In Chicago, too, a party was being planned with dancers enacting Bollywood scenes, a DJ and Indian food.

Elsewhere in New York, Children’s Hope India, an NGO started in 1992 by a group of professional women in the Big Apple to better the lives of disadvantaged children in India, has teamed up with the Indo-American Arts Council for a big Oscar-viewing event in mid-town.

An autographed Slumdog poster, a music box, Slumdog books and the film’s screenplay will be raffled for a charity.

Slumdog Millionaire premiered last November at the eighth Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival, which is annually organised by the hosts of tonight’s Manhattan party, long before the film became a screen sensation.

At that time, even its distribution worldwide faced question marks after the original distributor, Warner Independent, folded up just before Slumdog was to be released.

Slumdog has its day but not Indians
      - Author at Oscars as someone else’s guest; TV rues lack of special treatment
      AMIT ROY

Vikas Swarup with wife Aparna in Los Angeles
Los Angeles, Feb. 22: Vikas Swarup, the author of Q & A that has been turned into Slumdog Millionaire, has been denied a ticket in his own right to the red-carpet Oscar event.

“I am only going as someone’s guest,” said Swarup with a wry grin on arrival in Los Angeles yesterday, a day ahead of the Oscar ceremony.

He nodded at his artist wife Aparna standing by him and said: “So far she doesn’t have a ticket — but let’s see.”

Swarup let slip a wistful smile: “The author is the most dispensable part of the whole thing.”

Until the last minute, the author, who felt the organisers were not showing India “sufficient respect”, was not even sure he would bother to make the journey from Pretoria in South Africa where he is the deputy high commissioner.

Swarup was a diplomat based at the Indian high commission in London when he wrote Q & A “in the three months between July and September 2003”.

He laughed at the fickleness of fate: “Some authors have to write 40-50 drafts before their novel is accepted for publication. With mine, it’s the first draft.”

Aparna is not allowing the refusal of the organisers to give her husband a red-carpet ticket, so he could take himself “plus one”, to spoil her fun. “At least I can go to the after-Oscar party (that’s being given by an Indian, Krish Menon, who is big in LA),” she said.

Not for her western designer outfits in the style affected by Freida Pinto, the glamorous face of Slumdog Millionaire — “I am wearing a sari.”

And her husband? “Oh, he will wear Indian,” Aparna cut in. “He looks very smart in it.”

“A dark bandhgala for me,” confirmed Swarup.

As a senior Indian diplomat, Swarup had to pull strings to secure passports at the eleventh hour for some of the Mumbai child actors. “And then some strings were pulled at the state department in Washington to get them visas.”

Swarup said that now that he was in Los Angeles, all differences had been set to one side. “Danny (Boyle, the director) has sent me a sweet note, ‘You were there at the start. I am glad you will be there at the end’.”

Swarup is not the only one. Television teams from India feel disenchanted that all have been denied positions by the side of the famous red carpet which would have allowed them to interview the stars before they disappear into the Kodak Theatre from where the Oscar ceremony is telecast live to the world.

One even accused the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences, which handles media accreditation, of “downright racism – what else can you call it?”, though this was going too far. The Indian TV companies, who were desperate to cover the Oscars only after January 22 when Slumdog received 10 nominations, had been caught out by the rule which required all applications for red carpet positions had to be sent in by November last year.

“In India, we would somehow have managed – now we have all these people from India going down the red carpet and no one to interview them properly,” said one aggrieved presenter. “I have been trying since January but the Academy press people won’t budge.”

Another presenter voiced equal resentment: “This is a great moment for India – but we are not being allowed to cover it. They refuse to show any flexibility.”

The children are, as promised, are having a fun time, though. Yesterday, they were taken to the Universal Studios “where we loved everything, and I mean everything”, said one.

They were given “good security” to keep away paparazzi “chasing us on motorcycles” – a new experience for little Rubina Ali and Mohammed Azharuddin Ismail.

Last night, they attended an impromptu party at the Oscar team hotel – Swarup has been booked at another hotel – where Freida mothered them, while Boyle, an exceedingly warm character like his producer, Christian Coulson, joined them for “happy family photographs”.

Anil Kapoor enthusiastically waded into the group.

Stars some of them might be in their own land but the arrival of the Indians is giving a headache to the telephone operators and the hotel reception.

      “May I direct your call?”

“May I speak to Anil Kapoor, please?”

      “What is the last name?”

      “Kapoor.”

      “Is that with a ‘C’?”

      Chance missed to solve Kashmir
      JOBY WARRICK

      Musharraf, Singh
Washington, Feb. 22: India and Pakistan engaged in nearly three years of secret, high-level talks that narrowly missed achieving a historic breakthrough in the conflict over Kashmir, according to an account set for publication this week.

The negotiations, which began in 2004, produced the outlines of an accord that would have allowed a gradual demilitarisation of the disputed area.

The effort stalled in 2007, and the prospects for a settlement were further undermined by the terrorist attacks on Mumbai in November, the report said.

The peace initiative is described in an article by investigative journalist Steve Coll, who writes in New Yorker magazine that the two sides had “come to semicolons” in their negotiations when the effort lost steam.

The attempt ultimately failed, not because of substantive differences, Coll writes, but because declining political fortunes left Pakistan’s then President, Pervez Musharraf, without the clout he needed to sell the agreement at home. Although Musharraf fought for the deal — as did Prime Minister Manmohan Singh — the President became so weakened politically that he “couldn’t sell himself”, let alone a surprise peace deal, Coll says, quoting Pakistani and Indian officials. Musharraf resigned as President in August.

Coll, a former Washington Post managing editor who won a Pulitzer Prize in 2005 for his book Ghost Wars, writes that the resolution of the Kashmir dispute was the cornerstone of a broad agreement that would have represented a “paradigm shift”.

Under the plan, the Kashmir conflict would have been resolved through the creation of an autonomous region in which residents could move freely and conduct trade on both sides. Over time, the border would become irrelevant, and declining violence would allow a gradual withdrawal of tens of thousands of troops.

“It was huge — I think it would have changed the basic nature of the problem,” an Indian official was quoted as saying. “You would have then had the freedom to remake Indo-Pakistani relations.”

The secret negotiations consisted of about two dozen meetings in hotel rooms in various overseas locations. The sessions revolved around developing a document known as a “non-paper” — text that bears no names or signatures and can “serve as a deniable but detailed basis for a deal”.

The US and the UK were aware of the talks and offered low-key support and advice but otherwise elected to let India and Pakistan settle their disputes unaided.

Musharraf is portrayed as an enthusiastic supporter of the deal who succeeded in winning converts among the sceptical military leadership.

But in March 2007, as the two capitals were discussing plans for a historic summit, Musharraf became embroiled in a public feud with his country’s highest court that culminated in his resignation. Bilateral relations began a downward slide thereafter.
