After the failure of recent talks between Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and National Security Advisor James Jones, India has been singled out but still it will work to achieve some of the US objectives which suits New Delhi. New Delhi was quick enough to pick up the mood of Washington over its reaction on February 26, Kabul attack. India claims that the attack was carried out on Indian nationals but for unknown reasons Washington is adamant not accept that target of the attackers was Indians. If we recall, Holbrooke, said on March 3, "I don't accept the fact that this was an attack on an Indian facility. There were foreigners and non- Indians hurt. It was a soft target. Let's not jump to conclusions." Indian National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon who just concluded his visit of Kabul claimed that the terrorists' chief target were Indians. It is pertinent to mention here that in February 26 attack, suicide bombers struck at a hotel and a guest house in Kabul, killing seven Indians. In a latest development, another setback for India is on its way as Washington intends not put David Headley on gallows and award him lighter sentence. Headley, who is main culprit behind Mumbai attack and agent of US top intelligence agencies, got the plea bargain entered in federal court in Chicago.

Some Indians, in order to prove that they are liberal and open-minded, often cross all limits. The Meghalaya Police on February 18, seized around 120 books with blasphemous pictures of Jesus Christ from a distributor in Bara Bazar and the principal of Christian missionary School. The offensive picture was found in a cursive writing exercise book used by Class I students of St. Joseph Girls Higher Secondary School in Shillong, capital of Meghalaya.

The puppets are puppets and the human beings are human beings. No puppet can replace a man and so is it in the case of any ruler, may that be the president of Afghanistan. Almost 168 years back, during the first Anglo-Afghan war, the British after contriving the over throw of Amir Dost Mohammad Khan who surrendered to the British after some resistance, and was deported to India; Shah Shuja was installed as a "puppet king" by them. Ironically the puppet was killed by the Afghans within months and they continued their struggle for freedom under the leadership of Akbar Khan who later emerged as a hero, whom they remember and respect even today. The interesting thing is that the dare devil Afghans made the British lick the dust in a way that in January 1842, out of 16,500 soldiers and 12,000 dependents only a solitary survivor, of mixed British-Indian garrison, was allowed by the Afghan warriors to reach back to Jalalabad Fort, on a stumbling pony.

The psychological injuries disgracefully inflicted upon defenseless detainees and foreign prisoners leave permanent scars in their memories. Maltreatment and torturous detention provides windfall to vengeance and fillip to brutal instincts. Resultantly the peace efforts between the belligerent states like India and Pakistan quickly get spoiled turning the edgy atmosphere into more tense and panicky. Thus misgivings, mistrust and mischief shape the social ambiance and political tone. Consequently the human sufferings continue unabated.
