SLUM DWELLERS MAKING USE OF RTI ACT THE MOST
Kolkata: March 25, 2010

The Chief Information Commissioner, Central Information Commission,
Shri Wajahat Habibullah said today that 13 per cent awarenes among
rural people within four years of promulgation of RTI Act was a
commendable feat. He was speaking on "RTI Act – Bedrock of Democracy,
Justice and Good Governance" at the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce
here today. Shri Habibullah said 40 per cent of RTI applications filed
were from illiterates. Slum dwellers were the major chunk of
population who used the Act.

The Chief Information Commissioner said NGOs worked at the rural level
while the media played a big role in urban areas to publicize the RTI
Act.
