Kashmir conference begins today


International delegates arrive in Muzaffarabad

Muzaffarabad, May 22: A two-day international conference on "Kashmir in Emerging Global Perspectives" is all set to begin tomorrow with the arrival of delegates from different parts of the world here in the capital city of Pakistan administered Kashmir.

Pakistan Prime Minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani will be inaugurating the conference at Hotel Pearl Continental Monday morning amid tight security arrangements. Organised by University of "Azad Jammu and Kashmir" (UAJK) more than 40 selected participants are attending the two days of brainstorming sessions on various topics related to problem of Jammu and Kashmir.

President of PAK Raja Zulqarnain Khan and Moulana Fazl ur Rehman, Chairman of Kashmir Committee Pakistan will, jointly chair the first session according to Conference Organiser Dr Raja Nasim Akhtar. Chairman Kashmiri American Council Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai will deliver the inaugural address on UN resolutions and Kashmir.

"The major objective of the conference is to provide a platform to researchers and scholars to share their views and ideas on Kashmir in the emerging global scenario, particularly in the backdrop of a renewed Kashmiri quest for their rights. The conference covers a range of themes including fresh perspectives on many issue, socio-economic impact of Kashmir issue on the region, effectiveness of CBMs, human rights situation etc," Dr Nasim said.

Besides the historical perspective on Kashmir problem, human rights, socio economic issues, post conflict resolution, LOC trade and bus service, politics of India and Pakistan are the main issues being discussed at the conference from May 23-24.

Prominent academicians, journalists, political activists, scholars and thinkers from India, Pakistan, and both parts of Jammu and Kashmir are participating in the conference. Some prominent names include General Talat Masood, Arif Kamal, Shaheen Akhtar, Dr Siddique Wahid, Dr Shujaat Bukhari, Rita Manchanda, WKDA Secretary General Murtaza Shibli, Anuradha Bhasin, Anuradha Chenoy, Nadira Mirza, Ejaz A Khan, Farid Malik, Z G Mohammad, Nazir A Shawl, Nisar Hamdani, Javed Bashir, Z U Khan, Javed Hayat, Kamal Chenoy, Seema Mustafa and Zafar Chowdhary.
