'Mainstream Western media ditch facts'

Posted: 09 May 2011 03:48 AM PDT

The mainstream media have left out key facts about the "contradictory" US claims about killing Osama bin Laden although many questions remain unanswered, an analyst says.

"We have the release of some videos [of bin Laden] which really didn't answer any questions; they were very selective; they didn't have sound…which is more of a propaganda exercise than an information exercise," said Danny Schechter, an editor at Mediachannel.org, in an interview with Press TV.

'US killed bin Laden for a second time'

Posted: 09 May 2011 01:30 AM PDT

The US has announced that its navy soldiers have managed to kill al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden during an operation near a Pakistani military camp in Abbottabad.

Critics, however, cast doubt on credibility of the story after different US official gave contradictory remarks about the details of the operation.

New Bin Laden Tapes Appear Fake Like Earlier Ones

On May 2, AP writer Matt Apuzzo headlined, "US Official: New bin Laden tape, recorded shortly before death, expected to surface soon," saying:

"US intelligence officials believe (he) made a propaganda recording shortly before his death and expect that tape to surface soon....A new recording (would) provide a final word from beyond the grave...."

Troy Anthony Davis: Unjustly Sentenced to Death

Capital punishment is barbaric, unjust, and unacceptable for any reason in modern societies. No wonder Amnesty International (AI) calls it "the ultimate denial of human rights. It is premeditated and cold-blooded killing of a human being by the state. This cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment is done in the name of justice."

In fact, there's nothing just about state-sponsored murder, especially against falsely accused victims. In America, they're mostly poor Black or Latinos denied due process and judicial fairness by a corrupted prosecutorial system rigged to convict even known innocent defendants like Troy Anthony Davis.

Libyan majority won't join 'NATO revolt'

Posted: 08 May 2011 11:41 PM PDT

The Libyan revolution has not spread further than the eastern provinces and cannot survive without NATO's attacks, thus some say it is not a revolution.

Press TV talks with Sukant Chandan, an independent film maker who describes the so-called revolutionaries as pro-NATO contras. Meanwhile, life in the Libyan capital Tripoli is peaceful and normal. Following is a transcript of his interview.

'US caught off-guard in Libya'

Posted: 08 May 2011 10:48 PM PDT

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says he is optimistic Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi's "time is over," but adds the conflict requires a political -- not a military -- solution.

In an interview with Press TV, Michael Maloof, former Pentagon officer from Washington, has analyzed possible solutions for the crisis in Libya.

Levy: 'Israel is more insecure than ever'

Posted: 08 May 2011 05:22 PM PDT

"It is unlikely that Israel will welcome a more independent, strategic or empowered Palestinian counterpart. Yet, Israel is today more, not less, insecure and uncertain of its future," wrote Daniel Levy in Gurdian (April 28, 2011). Levy is a former adviser to PM Ehud Barak and currently a senior fellow at the New America Foundation, a neocon think tank.

In February 2011 – Daniel Levy wrote in the Prospects for Peace, under the title "After Mubarak – What Does Israel Do?" In the said article, Levy accepted the fact that Israel used the 1978 Camp David Accords to serve its expansion policy – from 10,000 settlers living in the West Bank in 1978, they have increased to over 300,000 today.

Does the Queen's Britain really support justice?

Posted: 08 May 2011 04:16 PM PDT

Can any government able and willing to lead such an attack on civil liberty and legal precepts can ever give a guarantee that men held in the Queen's Britain without charge will not be subject to "extraordinary rendition" and taken to a nameless detention facility in a third country to be tortured? Or sent into the legal limbo of Guantanamo? Or worse, simply put up against a wall and shot the moment they arrive on US soil? This is not scare-mongering, but real fears for the well-being of the men concerned and for the the Queen's British justice system.

Media Ignores Fukushima Fire

Posted: 08 May 2011 10:21 AM PDT

Image captures of video footage from the Fukushima nuclear plant appear to show a fire. According to Alexander Higgins and other bloggers, the Japanese shut down the webcam after the images below appeared on the internet. Lucas White Field Hixson posted the images last night, according to Higgins. There is also an animation of the images posted on YouTube.

Fukushima is now almost entirely off the corporate media radar screen. If the photos below are accurate, the situation at the plant is out of control and still emitting dangerous levels of radiation. There is no mention of the fire or a possible explosion at the plant by the corporate media.

The Transparent Cabal: The Neoconservative Agenda

The thesis of Stephen J. Sniegoski's carefully-researched and persuasively-argued book is that the primary aim of the calamitous invasion of Iraq in 2003 was not to avenge an assassination plot against the President's father, to liberate the Iraqi people, to combat terrorist threats to US security, to enhance US global power, to spread democracy, nor to control oil reserves, but rather to improve the strategic position of Israel: "The origins of the American war on Iraq revolve around the United States' adoption of a war agenda whose basic format was conceived in Israel to advance Israeli interests and was ardently pushed by the influential pro-Israeli American neoconservatives, both inside and outside the Bush administration" (p. 351). Sniegoski's assertion is not that the "neocons" deliberately promoted Israel's interest at the expense of the United States, but rather that they "viewed American foreign policy in the Middle East through the lens of Israeli interest, as Israeli interest was perceived by the Likudniks" (p. 5).

'Trial of Bahraini activists unjust'

Posted: 08 May 2011 07:35 AM PDT

The Bahraini government has announced that 21 activists will be tried on alleged charges of attempting to overthrow the ruling monarchy.

In an interview with Press TV, Nabeel Rajab, president of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights, expressed his thoughts on the latest developments in the Persian Gulf country. The following is a transcript of the interview:

Reflections on the official announcement of the death of Osama Bin Laden

Posted: 08 May 2011 07:02 AM PDT

President Barack Obama solemnly announced the death of Osama Bin Laden on May 1st, 2011.

Before looking into the symbolic significance of this announcement, let's first do a reality check.

'Saleh credibility harms intl. community'

Posted: 08 May 2011 06:18 AM PDT

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh leads the international community including the [P]GCC into his trap as he rejects a fourth proposal to step down from power.

In an interview with Press TV, Mohamed Qubaty, political opposition activist, tells us that the international community is losing credibility for keeping Saleh aloft in power despite the blatant brutalities he's doing to his people.

Bin Laden Hoax….The Rest Of The Story

Posted: 08 May 2011 06:15 AM PDT

The "Bin Laden" hoax is consuming our time and energy even as the global corporate-financier oligarchs flee forward cashing in on the political capital they presume they have gained by making this announcement. Even a superficial examination of mainstream media's headlines and interviews with the CIA director himself calls into question the official narrative with mind numbing contradictions and faulty logic even a child could spot.

The CIA itself is only 95% sure, based on facial recognition, that they bagged their rouge agent. A London Guardian report compounds this uncertainty stating that the CIA compared the alleged DNA of this man they claim to have shot dead in Pakistan, not with a previous sample from Osama Bin Laden, but against a Bin Laden family member. If we are to believe any of this at all, the CIA is not even saying they are 100% sure, so why should we be?

Was bin Laden really calling the shots? Doubts in Pakistan

Posted: 08 May 2011 05:53 AM PDT

It didn't figure. U.S. Intelligence released footage of a grey- bearded, dishevelled figure wrapped in a shawl and wearing a woolen hat, and then it said that this same old man had been calling the shots on al Qaeda's plots around the globe.

There was doubt and derision in Pakistan on Sunday at the suggestion that Osama bin Laden's hideout north of the capital, Islamabad, was somehow an "active command and control center" for al Qaeda.

London Panel: 'Jewishness and Israeli criminality'

Posted: 07 May 2011 09:08 PM PDT

The British Israel lobby and the so-called 'anti-Zionist' groups had campaigned for weeks against holding an anti-Israel panel meeting at the University of Westminster Campus (London, UK). The topic of the debate was 'Jewishness and Israeli criminality'. The debate, scheduled on May 3 made a huge success.

Egypt and the US: Post Hosni Era

Last week I was in Egypt, a country presently moved by optimism. The optimism reflects a high state of political consciousness. Almost everyone I met, be they workers (urban and rural), students, shopkeepers, and the ubiquitous taxi drivers know why their country is beset by problems. They can itemize the structural flaws that led to massive corruption, economic deprivation and brutal repression. For instance, they all know that the "laughing cow" dictator, Hosni Mubarak, had substituted his personal interests, and that of his friends, for the national interest. Everyone has the same general notion of what needs to be done: destroy the power of this "party of thieves" and rid the country of the failed policies it has so long endured. How all this will play out in the new environment of relative freedom, with its multiple party formation and emotional debate, is uncertain. However, if the United States can refrain from its usual level of gross interference, things should end up better rather than worse. Hence, the optimism.

Lobby lectures Turkey on hate and bigotary

Robert O. Trestan, civil right counsel for a major pro-Israel American Jewish organization, Anti-Defamation League (ADL), had attended the three-day conference seeking ways to prevent hate speech and hate crimes, organized by the International Hrant Dink Foundation at Istanbul Bilgi University on April 15/17, 2011.

Abraham Foxman, the national director of ADL is well-known for his criticism of everyone who dares to criticize the Zionist regime – from former US President Jimmy Carter to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

'Lid about to blow off Syria'

Posted: 07 May 2011 03:47 AM PDT

The US is threatening to take new steps against the Syrian government in response to the latest bloody crackdown by security forces. Human rights groups say at least 30 people were killed in the violence during huge anti-government demonstrations across the country. fficials blame armed terrorist groups for the unrest, while protesters say they want an end to decades of repression and corruption. It's now thought more than 580 people have been killed since the uprising began seven weeks ago. Following on from the US sanctions and the threat of more to come, the EU has agreed on an assets freeze and a travel ban for top Syrian officials. But war correspondent Eric Margolis says western countries have ulterior motives behind their stance on Syria.

Gunfight at Abbottabad: Dismantling the Myth of an American Hero

Posted: 06 May 2011 11:00 PM PDT

In Hollywood Westerns, the sheriff engages in a shootout with bad guys and wins. Such was the story of Wyatt Earp, who killed rustlers in the "Gunfight at OK Corral". Then there is the American cowboy, represented by John Wayne — tall, handsome, Anglo-Saxon — who rides into town whistling before he dispatches the "bad guys" sometimes represented by "Indians" like Geronimo, the Apache, who supposedly terrorized innocent settlers.

Into that tradition, late on the night of May 1, stepped President Barack Obama, with a tale of a 40-minute gun battle that he personally monitored from the White House (complete with a photo of his national security team at work), to take out the world's most dangerous terrorist who used his own wife as a human shield. The bad guy was hiding out in a fortified million-dollar mansion in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where the "good guys" had no choice but to kill him.

"Justice has been done," said Obama in his midnight address. His lurid tale of a team of new American heroes was backed up by his team.

The Defeat of the United States by al-Qaeda

Posted: 06 May 2011 03:46 PM PDT

Since the announced killing of Emanuel Goldstein — er, Osama Bin Laden — I've seen much speculation on what kind of big terror attack we can expect in retaliation.  But if al-Qaeda was capable of a large-scale, spectacular reprisal attack, I think they'd already have done it between 9/11 and now. Their actual pattern since then has been one of poorly organized, penny ante attacks, carried out by poorly trained people — suggesting that they picked the low-hanging fruit on 9/11.

It's quite plausible that, given enough incompetent attempts, somebody will eventually succeed in detonating a bomb and blowing up a plane in the air.  Enough monkeys with enough typewriters and enough time, and all that.  But even if it happens, the damage will be limited to the passengers on one plane out of millions of flights in any one year.  With hardened cockpits and passengers who understand that the goal of hijacking has changed, it will never be possible to fly a plane into a high-value target again.  And it's unlikely all the TSA security theater in the airports, aimed at preventing the previous attack, is good for anything except satisfying the "Well, we have to do SOMETHING!" idjuts.

Pakistan: The Treason of the Rulers

Posted: 05 May 2011 09:00 PM PDT

http://www.opinion-maker.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/People-protesting-against-Pakistan-Rulers.-300x225.jpg

"Death to America", "death to Zardari"  "death to General Kiayani"  read the posters transmitting volatile voices of protest and anguish originating from the masses across Pakistan and other parts of the Arab-Islamic world. The rulers would have hard time in justifying their innocence and inaction at a time when the US elite forces were carrying out the Obama's sponsored cold blooded political murder of Osama bin Laden and his households including women and children.
