The United States Army has contracted an Israeli defense industry giant to perform the maintenance work and upgrading of parts for its Apache and Black Hawk helicopters.

The five-year deal was signed with Israel's TAT Technologies with which the US military has had decades of close dealings, UPI reported on Monday.

The Army has placed a USD 4.3 million purchase order with the company and the contract's value may reach USD 20 million over its course.

"This is a strategic contract for TAT in light of its size and of the potential for further cooperation with the US Army as well as with other military forces around the world," said TAT President and Chief Executive Officer Shmuel Fledel.

This year, Washington contributed over USD 3 billion to Tel Aviv's military ambitions up from 2.78 in 2010.

Meanwhile, the administration of US President Barak Obama has recently funded Israel's short-range missile system, known as the Iron Dome.

Israel claims it needs the system to intercept rockets allegedly fired from the blockaded Gaza Strip. Israeli forces regularly stage deadly attacks on the impoverished sliver, justifying the violent measures as a punishing response to alleged launching of the projectiles from the territory.
