How to use Right to Information Act effectively

The seminar on How to use the right to information act effectively conducted by Moneylife Foundation 16th April got such a huge response that many who were keen to attend could not be accommodated at the last minute. In view of the unprecedented interest on the issue, Moneylife Foundation is holding a second seminar on this issue on 14th May. Mr. Bhaskar Prabhu, Convenor of Mahiti Adhikar Manch, will address the programme to be held at the Moneylife Knowledge Centre. Mr. Prabhu is a name synonymous with the RTI movement especially in Mumbai, for, his numerous applications and inspections under the RTI Act has resulted in improved record keeping by the Municipal Corporation of Great Mumbai (MCGM).

Seminar details:
The Right to Information Act enables citizens to find out about government decisions and expenditure on facilities and services. People have used this legislation to check on the progress of plans for their neighbourhood, allocation of funds for large schemes and important appointments in government which has revealed mismanagement and corruption that required being set right. And while this may not seem such an easy task, it is very essential and many people are beginning to take up this responsibility. Mr. Bhaskar Prabhu will share his experience in using the RTI Act

Speaker: Bhaskar Prabhu, Convenor, Mahiti Adhikar Manch

Speaker's Profile: Mr. Bhaskar Anant Prabhu is a retail businessman who has been involved in social activities since his college days and he got involved with the empowerment of citizens a decade ago with the setting up of the F-South Ward Citizens Forum. The Forum brought together several NGOs and public spirited citizens to work to ensure trustworthy governance, correction of mistakes and remedy wrong practices in the system. He got involved in Consumer Guidance Society of India and was closely associated with Anna Hazare in implementing the Right to Information Act in Maharashtra in 2002.

Then in 2006, Mr. Prabhu launched Mahiti Adhikar Manch which networks in Maharashtra and across the country on the use of RTI, training people and organizations and monitoring its implementation. He has campaigned against bribery, the delay in making available information to the public and against the redevelopment of Mumbai's famous Crawford Market. The Manch has conducted workshops and street programmes to spread awareness on the use of RTI. Currently he focuses on the social audit of works done by public authorities.
