Hunger Strike Suspended till 25th June

A Press Release

For two decades the people of Manja have been requesting the authorities to complete the construction of RCC bridge and restore a temporary bridge. The jointly organized indefinite hunger strike began for this cause on 17th May and ended on 19th May, 11 am 2011.

On the first day of the strike media persons from the region both from print and electronic media highlighted the humanitarian need, we salute and acknowledge the role played by them.  Different organizations like KNA, KSO were with us throughout the programme, Organizations like KSYC expressed their solidarity and were with us on the first day. We had Mr. Holiram Terang the ex- MLA and his friends in our midst for several hours. Principals and teaching staff of Little Flower School and Manja Baptist School showed their solidarity by participating in the strike throughout.

On 18th May, the Assistant Engineer of PWD Mr. Pawan Timung came on the spot to give us the message that the PWD department will consider the demand of the people. The general public then requested Mr.Pawan to initiate a meeting with the officials. Hence, Mr. Timung came together with  the SDO of PWD Mr. Joel Timung and KAAC Joint Deputy i/c PWD Mr. R.K. Shome. The Joint Secretary assured us that the they will start the repairing work of temporary bridge on 19th May in the morning and the RCC Bridge within 25 days and will be completed within 6 months.

Although promises were made to begin the repairing work of the temporary bridge with proper foundations, the general public decided to end the strike only after seeing the work. On 19th May Assistant Engineer Mr.Pawan Timung came along with the staff to begin the repairing of the temporary bridge. The Hunger Strike organizing committee had a meeting with the public and called off their strike at 11 am.

The hunger strike organizing committee also would like to make it clear that the whole hunger strike programme was organized by the contributions from the people of the area, the total expense of  Rs.10,000 is not given or funded by any single individual, associations, parties, or NGO's  but is the hard earned money of the villagers. We make this statement in view of the suspicious search and questioning of people by our security forces during the hunger strike days in Manja.

We respect the laws and institutions of our country, however, we are conscious of our rights and will be forced to resume our hunger strike on the same spot if the temporary bridge is not repaired properly and if the work of the RCC bridge do not begin, we will resume our hunger strike without further notice to anybody on the 25th of June,2011 at 9 am . Our slogans continue to be ……..No Bridge No……………………. Rest.
