Subject: Who Killed Dr. Balmukund Bharti? Prof Thorat Committee Report on AIIMS
To:

Dr Balmukund Bharti was killed much before he committed 'suicide' on 3rd March, 2010. Suicide was a mere formality.

Abused, humiliated, harassed by professors continuously in AIIMS, beaten up severely by his seniors in the name of ragging, completely alienated from the 'mainstream' campus life, Dr Bharti died a very painful and slow death that stretched the entire period of about 6 years of his stay in AIIMS just because he belonged to a wrong caste.

The testimonies of his parents and relatives about the struggle of Dr Bharti is no surprise, not even his suicide after reading Prof Thorat Committee report that came three years before in 2007. Instead what surprises us is the guts and perseverance shown by the rest of Dalit and Adivasi students who have to endure utmost humiliation, dehumanization and violence and yet survive in a campus, that is supposed to train them to become doctors to serve humanity.

Perhaps, Dr. Bharti's death was not inevitable, perhaps he could have survived and become a doctor to fulfill his dreams if the authorities would have cared enough and acted on the report of the Prof Thorat Committee, three years before, that completely exposed AIIMS administration on caste discrimination.
